If you only print text or don’t use color printing, you will save money and have a longer printer life with a monochrome laser printer. You will get clean and sharper prints than inkjet printers and you can also use this as a multi function laser printer such as a combination laser printer scanner. You can also get a higher resolution from monochrome laser printers. Monochrome is black print on the page and resolution ranges from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200. You can print fonts as small as 2 to 3 points and still get a crisp, sharp clear print.
A laser color printer and monochrome printers work the same except color printers use 4 different toner types: black, cyan, magenta and yellow, monochrome printers use only one color-black. Pages print in one pass with a monochrome laser printer, with a color printer it takes 4 passes to print. One pass creates a raster version of the contents, then a charge is created on a rotating photoreceptive drum. That charge transfers to an output page which creates a fine powder of black pigment and plastic that sticks to the page surface. A monochrome laser printer can move faster than an inkjet printer because it uses a laser and the laser moves faster than a printhead putting out ink along the path of the printing.
A monochrome laser printer uses lasers to charge the drum that picks up toner but some also use LED’s to do the same thing. The LED’s is a fixed array the width of the page verses the movement of the laser beam. The quality of the print is similar but upon close inspection via a magnifying glass the LED printers more often rasterie edges, curves and angles. For most user expectations a wireless laser printer and LED are equal to quality of output.
Using a monochrome laser printer is more cost effective than inkjet printers because toner cartridges can print thousands of pages before refilling. Inkjet cartridges use more ink quickly and therefore must be replaced more often. Even though the upfront cost may be more with a monochrome laser printer, the cost per page is generally lower than with inkjet printers. Toner cartridges range between $60-$100.
