A Copier
Typically one of the features of a multi function laser printer is that it can function as a copier. This is not really a huge stretch of functioning, because the premise of a laser printer is that the image that is sent to the printer via a computer is copied onto the drum by the laser before it is printed out.
The combination of printer and copier seems to be a natural relationship.
The copier function is usually achieved by feeding the document to be copied into the printer, the laser scans this document and transfers the image onto the drum, the drum which is already hot collects toner from the toner cartridge and the toner adheres to the heat of the drum and is than transferred on to paper.
A Scanner
A scanner is a very useful piece of equipment to have in the office. A laser printer scanner works like a copier except that the image is saved as a file on the computer and than can either be printed out or recalled some time later on.
A scanner works under the same principles as the copier function the image is scanned by the laser, except it is not sent to the drum to be printed instead it is sent to the computer where it is saved.

Drawbacks
A multi function laser printer is not really practical for large copy jobs. The multi function laser printer is fine to be used to make up to ten copies at a time but it can not perform well for copies beyond that.
A multi function laser printer is ideal for local print use but is not a great network option because of the multi function feature the printer can often be busy when in use by another person on the network.
A multi function laser printer is also not the quickest printer available, it averages around 30 pages per minute with higher end models generating around 70 pages per minute. Compared to a monochrome laser printer this is pretty slow, but sufficient.
